Worcester, Mass. (September 14) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team (0-3) dropped a close game at home on Sunday to the visiting Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks (3-0-2). The Hounds are set to open Northeast-10 Conference competition at home on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
The Redhawks netted the only goal of the game just 20 minutes into an evenly matched first half. The Hounds' defense held throughout the rest of the half to send Assumption to the locker room down by just one.
During the first half, both teams had posted six shots, however it was the Hounds who were leading the offense, posting four shots on goal in the period.
In the second half, the Hounds searched for opportunities and attempted eight more shots compared to the Redhawks' seven, but they were unable to find the back of the net for the tying goal.
Both teams displayed a strong defensive effort in the contest. Assumption keeper Dana King (Windham, Maine / Windham) tallied three saves between the post while the Hound defense added another by freshman Connor Henry (Northborough, Mass. / Algonquin Regional).
Assumption accumulated 13 shots on the day, compared to 14 for Roberts Wesleyan while the teams came up even in corner kicks with four. The Redhawks tallied 12 fouls in the match compared to just five for the Hounds.
Assumption is set to return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 as they host the first of three-straight home NE-10 contests. The three-game home stand kicks off with Southern Connecticut at 1 p.m. (9/20) followed by American International (9/24) and Franklin Pierce (9/27).
