Field Hockey Picks Up First Win of the Season, 4-1

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (September 17) -- In non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon, the Assumption College field hockey team picked up its first win of the season with a road 4-1 victory over Mercy College. The win gives the Hounds a 3-0 lead over the Mavericks in the all-time series.

Junior Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) got the Hounds on the board just 1:52 into the game with her second goal of the season as she chipped in the first shot of the game into an open net for the 1-0 edge. In the first half, shots were even at 6-6 while Mercy held a slight 7-5 edge in penalty corners.

Assumption came out firing to start the second half as well as senior Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) scored up the right side and under the pads of the Mercy goalie just 5:40 into the period for the 2-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Anderson and was assisted on by junior Allison Juneau (Auburn, Mass./Auburn).

Mercy got on the board just under 12 minutes into the second half as Jaclyn Ballin knocked home a loose ball out of a group of players to cut the lead down to 2-1 in favor of Assumption. The Hounds locked down defensively though over the rest of the game while also netting a pair of goals to seal the 4-1 victory.

Sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) scored off a rebound with 5:37 left for the 3-1 lead, while a last-minute goal also off a rebound by junior Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) accounted for the 4-1 final. The goals by Sullivan and Colucci were the first of the season for each.

Senior Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made six saves in the win, while Olivia Kelly turned aside seven shots in the defeat. For the game, Assumption held a 22-15 edge in shots while the Mavericks with an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.

With the win, Assumption improves to 1-2 overall on the season, while Mercy remains winless at 0-3.

Assumption is back in action on Monday, September 22nd as the Hounds travel to Southern Connecticut for a non-conference game beginning at 5 p.m.
