Worcester, Mass. (September 20) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team (0-4, 0-1 NE-10) fell to #7 Southern Connecticut (4-0, 2-0 NE-10) by a score of 2-1 in the final minutes of a close match-up on Saturday afternoon at the Assumption College Multi-Sport Stadium.
The Hounds kicked off the match with a strong defensive showing on Saturday. Junior Dana King (Windham, Maine / Windham) tallied eight saves in the first half, keeping the Owls scoreless for over 41 minutes.
It wasn't until there were less than four minutes left in the first period that Southern Connecticut was able to notch its first goal, sending the Hounds to the locker room down by one at the half.
In the second period, the Hounds pressed the Owl defense, posting five shots, compared to just two in the first half. In the 66th minute it was senior captain Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury) who scored the equalizer for the Hounds off of a cross from classmate Alex Parisi (Methuen, Mass. / Central Catholic).
With less than two minutes to go in the second half, the match looked to be headed into overtime before a foul in the box by the Greyhounds allowed the Owls a penalty kick. Southern Connecticut's Kevin Joslyn found left corner of the net for the game-winner with 1:29 left to play.
Southern Connecticut tallied 25 shots on the day, compared to just seven for the Hounds. King registered 14 saves between the posts compared to just two for Owl keeper Veronier.
Assumption is set to return to action Wednesday, Sept. 24 to host American International for the Hounds' second NE-10 contest of the season.
