Box Score

West Haven, Conn. (September 20) -- Assumption piled up 513 yards of total offense, including 303 yards in the air, as the Hounds defeated the University of New Haven by a 24-20 final in Northeast-10 Conference football action at DellaCamera Stadium. The win is the first for the Hounds over the Chargers since the 2010 season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Hounds got on the board first just 3:18 into the second quarter as junior Trevor Vasey (Cumberland, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) scored on a quarterback keeper from one yard out for the 7-0 edge. The scoring drive was a 21-play drive that stretched 7:25 in the opening half. Assumption extended the lead up to 14-0 with 4:26 remaining in the first half as senior Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) scored from six yards out up the middle to cap off a seven-play, 88-yard drive. The touchdown was set up by a 65-yard reception by senior Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat), who raced up the New Haven sideline before being pushed out at the one yard line. Heriveaux scored on the following play from six yards out after a five-yard Assumption penalty pushed them back.

New Haven cut the lead in half in the final minute of the opening half as Andre Anderson scored from three yards out to make it a 14-7 score at the break as his run capped an 11-play, 73-yard drive.

Receiving the opening kickoff in the second half, Assumption converted that possession into three points as senior All-American Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./Saint John's Prep) knocked home a 34-yard field goal to cap a drive that took just 2:35. The Chargers put together a scoring drive on the following possession as well, taking just 2:51 to find the end zone as Anderson scored from one  yard out to cut the Assumption advantage to just 17-14.

Assumption had chances to put the game out of reach, but a field goal off the upright and a fumble at the goal line ended two straight possessions. The Assumption defense held the Chargers off the scoreboard in that stretch though and the game headed into the final minutes at 17-14 in favor of the visitors.

With under two minutes remaining, the Hounds fumbled on a first down play but recovered, setting up second down and 14 from the 44-yard line. Sophomore Alex Shain (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) made his lone carry of the game count with 1:38 left as he raced to the left, around the edge and up the sideline to seal the game at 24-14. New Haven scored on an 11-yard pass to Ty Headen from Joey Bradley in the back of the end zone as time expired to account for the 24-20 final in front of a crowd of 3,876.

The Hounds rushed for 210 yards on 50 carries, led by an 89-yard effort by senior De'Ontray Johnson (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) on 24 rushes for 89 yards. In the air, Vasey completed 17-of-27 passes for 303 yards while also running for 36 yards and a touchdown. Both Frazier and junior Dave Call (Springville, N.Y./Saint Francis) posted 100-yard days for the receiving corps, led by the 109-yard effort by Frazier for his second 100-yard game of the year. Call tied for the team lead with five receptions while finishing with exactly 100 yards for the first time in his career.

For the Chargers, Anderson ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, while Headen caught 10 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Bradley was efficient for the Chargers at quarterback, completing 35 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown while also rushing once for 11 yards.

On defense, sophomore Jarrod Casey (Milford, Mass./Bridgton Academy) led the Hounds with 12 total tackles, along with a 10-tackle effort by senior Erik Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional). The game is the second double-digit tackle game in a row for Abramson, who leads the team with 33 tackles thru three games. For New Haven, Tarik Pusey and Tyler Condit tied for the team lead with seven tackles each.

With the win, Assumption improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers remain winless at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the league. This is also the first time since 2003 that New Haven has started with an 0-3 mark.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, September 27th as the Hounds play host to LIU Post for their Homecoming game beginning at 1 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
