New Haven, Conn. (September 22) -- In non-conference action on Monday evening, the Assumption College field hockey team won its second straight game with a convincing 5-1 road victory over Southern Connecticut at Jess Dow Field. The Hounds jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back, en route to the win over the Owls.
Assumption got on the board just 7:43 into the first half as junior Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) tallied her third goal of the season for the early 1-0 lead. Beatrice won the race to a loose ball and shot into the lower left corner for the goal. Just under six minutes later, sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) notched her second goal of the season as she put home a rebound from five yards out for the 2-0 advantage. The Hounds eventually took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break as freshman Alison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) scored with six minutes remaining in the first period, putting home her second goal of the year after the SCSU goalie overran the ball and left the net open.
The Owls got on the board just 1:05 into the second half as Emma Farrel redirected a shot by Kristi Montemurro for her first goal of the season and the 3-1 margin. Assumption pushed the lead back up to three at 4-1 with 16:12 remaining in the game as freshman Catie Laraway (Westfield, Mass./Williston-Northampton School) registered her second goal of the season. Assisting on the goal were sophomores Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass./Quaboag Regional) and Sullivan, with the play beginning off of an Assumption penalty corner.
Sheahan picked up her second goal of the game with 12:30 left as she tipped home a ball from Sullivan for the commanding 5-1 lead.
Senior Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made three saves for the Hounds in the win, while Audrey Dolloff had 13 stops while suffering the loss.
The Hounds held a convincing 18-5 advantage in shots on goal, along with a 12-8 edge in penalty corners.
Sheahan led the team with a pair of goals to go along with one goal and two assists by Sullivan.
Assumption evens its record at 2-2 overall with the victory, while Southern Connecticut drops to 1-4 on the season.
The Hounds are back in action on Thursday, September 25th as the team travels to Merrimack for a 7 p.m. start in North Andover, Mass. That game is a non-conference matchup.
