Box Score Colchester, V.T. (September 5) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team (0-1) opened its season with a 3-0 loss to the Stonehill Skyhawks (1-0) on Friday in its first game of the 2014 Catholic Cup. The Hounds return to action tomorrow against Saint Anselm (0-1) at 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks took the lead nearly 24 minutes into the first half when a Hound defender attempted to head a corner kick out of the box. The hit forced the ball to sail over the head of Hound goalie, Dana King (Windham, Maine / Windham), to put Assumption behind 1-0.
With the Skyhawks ahead by one, Assumption was able to earn one corner kick by senior Matt Flynn (East Falmouth, Mass. / Falmouth) before Stonehill tallied three corners of their own, ultimately resulting in their second goal at the 36:24 mark.
The squads headed into the half with the Greyhounds trailing 2-0.
Assumption held the Skyhawk lead to two until halfway through the second period when Stonehill's Craig Moreau notched the team's third and final goal to clinch the shutout.
Assumption posted six shots, two on goal, compared to nine shots, six on goal, for the Skyhawks in the loss. Stonehill also dominated the boards in corner kicks, posting nine to Assumption's three.
King collected two saves on the day while sophomore Johnny Aviza (Medway, Mass. / Medway) registered a team save to total three for the Hounds.
Assumption returns to action tomorrow against Saint Anselm at 1 p.m. to conclude its appearance in the 2014 Catholic Cup.
