Hookset, N.H. (January 17) -- After a close overtime loss at home against Southern New Hampshire in November, the Assumption College men's ice hockey team claimed a 4-1 victory over the Penmen on Saturday night on the road in their second match-up of the season. Junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) helped lead the Hounds in the win with an unassisted goal and an assist.
With the win, Assumption improves to 7-9 overall while SNHU drops to 7-8 on the season. The Hounds will face Southern New Hampshire for the two squads' final game of the season on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass.
The Greyhounds got the scoring started just less than halfway through the first period when Erban netted his eighth goal of the season. It was followed just over five minutes later by an equalizer from SNHU's Kyle Valliere to send the squads into the second period deadlocked at one apiece.
The goal would be the last for Southern New Hampshire as the Hounds came out on fire in the beginning of the second. Senior Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) found the back of the net at the 4:36 mark, assisted by freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) and Erban, before junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) posted another unassisted tally less than a minute later to give the Hounds a commanding 3-1 lead.
Neither squad was able to bury the puck throughout most of the third period, until SNHU pulled back-up goaltender Matthew MacInnis in favor of an extra skater near the end of the period. With just 54 seconds left to play, senior Matt Dalton (Medway, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) recorded his first goal of the season with an unassisted run to the empty net.
Overall, the Penmen outshot the Hounds 32-29 while going 0-for-3 on power play opportunities. Assumption also failed to capitalize on the man advantage, going 0-for-5 on the night.
Junior goaltender Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury) posted 31 saves in his 60 minutes between the pipes while starting SNHU goalie Ryan Slatky tallied 23 in just over 53 minutes before MacInnis added two more in just over 16 minutes.
Offensively, Erban and Shaw led Assumption with seven and four shots on goal, respectively. On the ice, Farrell finished the contest +3 while Shaw and Erban each finished +2.
The Greyhounds are set to return to action on Sunday, Jan. 18, in their second-straight day of competition. Assumption travels to face Wentworth at Walter Brown Arena in Boston, Mass. for a 4:40 p.m. puck drop.
