Worcester, Mass. (January 6) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team claimed its fifth win in its last six games on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State at Buffone Arena. Junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) led the Hounds with two goals and one assist. Bete also leads the Hounds with 10 goals on the season.
With the win, Assumption improves to 6-8 on the season while the Falcons fall to 3-7-2.
Fitchburg State got out to a swift start in the first period, outshooting Assumption 14-8. It was the Hounds, however, who notched the first goal of the game with 4:49 left in the period. The Greyhound offense stopped the puck at the blue line in the Falcons' zone, allowing junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) to set up Bete with a clear shot from the left side of the zone.
With the Hounds leading 1-0, both teams came out with great energy to start the second period. Assumption maintained the narrow lead until about halfway into the period when the Falcon's Nat Rojas was able to find the back of the net for Fitchburg State to even the score. Rojas was assisted by Mike Fish on the play and the teams went into the third period tied 1-1.
The Greyhound offense dominated in the third period, outshooting the Falcons 10-5 while adding two more goals.
The first goal of the period came with 13:36 left on the clock. Freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) brought the puck up from his own zone, splitting defenders along the way. He dumped the puck off to Bete in the Falcons' zone who found sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley). Gomez notched a top-shelf goal to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead.
The final tally came with just 12 seconds left in the contest after the Falcons pulled goalkeeper Ryan Wysocki in favor of an extra skater to help tie the score. Bete intercepted a pass and warded off a defender on his way to an unassisted, open-net goal.
Assumption goalie Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury) recorded 36 saves on the day, bringing his season total 356 saves between the posts.
Assumption looks to continue its momentum on Friday, Jan. 9, when the squad faces Nichols College, a team that earned a 4-2 victory over the Hounds earlier this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. on the road.
