THE BASICS:

-The Lead: After getting out to a 2-1 lead in the first period, the Assumption College ice hockey team came back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the Johnson & Wales Wildcats 4-4 on Tuesday night at Buffone Arena. Senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) and junior Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) each finished the night with two points, Bete on a goal and an assist, Gomez on two assists.
Goaltender Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) notched a career-high 59 saves in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds got out to a 1-0 lead just 2:34 into the game when sophomore Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) collected a rebound and buried the puck into the back of the net, assisted by Bete and Gomez.
-Johnson & Wales tied the game in the 13th minute when Stefan Brucato blasted a shot from the left that landed in the top right corner past Commesso to even the score, 1-1.
-With just 30 seconds left in the frame, the Hounds reclaimed the lead when Bete took a swift pass from Gomez and took a quick shot from the left into the top right corner, 2-1 Hounds.
-The Wildcats scored three straight in the second period to take a 4-2 lead heading into the third.
-In the third period, the Hounds rallied for two goals within 1:08 to tie the game at 4-4.
-The comeback started with a power-play goal off the stick of sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) at 6:58. Mahoney was assisted by sophomore Ryan Bunyon (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) and junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, NH / Kennett) on the goal from the slot.
-At the start of the eighth minute, junior Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H. / Keene) wrapped around the back of the net to the right and blasted a shot into the right side of the net to tie the game, ultimately sending the Hounds into overtime. Fenuccio's goal was assisted by senior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) and junior Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Commesso led the Assumption defense with his career-best 59 saves in his 65 minutes between the post.
-The Johnson & Wales goaltenders, Anthony Giordano and Tyler Ellor, combined for 36 saves in net. Giordano started the contest, allowing two goals in 30:15 before Ellor relieved him in the second to allow two more in 34:45.
-Offensively, Erban led the Hounds with seven shots on goal while Bete followed with six.
-Overall, Johnson & Wales outshot Assumption 63-40, in large part due to a 17-4 advantage in the second period, and a 13-2 edge in overtime.
-Both teams capitalized on one power-play opportunity on the day.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-The contest marks the second tie for the Hounds in three games.
-Commesso's 59 saves marks a career best for the junior, surpassing his previous career-high of 58, which he tallied in a 3-3 tie against Wentworth on Jan. 18, 2014 as a freshman.
-Tuesday's start marks Commesso's fourth of the season. Last season Commesso appeared in just four games all season.
-For the third-straight game, Erban has led the Assumption offense in shots.
-Bete now leads the Hounds with seven points on the season.
UP NEXT:
-Assumption is scheduled to return to action on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 28-29, when the Hounds host the 2015 Worcester Shootout. The annual tournament will feature Becker, Nichols and Worcester State as the Hounds take on Becker in the first game at 4:30 p.m.
