THE BASICS:

-The Lead: The Assumption College ice hockey team claimed a 6-3 win over Becker on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the 2015 Worcester Shootout. The Hounds were led by junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, NH / Kennett) and sophomore Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) who each scored twice in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds jumped out to a quick lead just 2:41 into the first period when Murphy scored on an assist from sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree).
-Becker evened the score in the 18th minute and took the lead one minute into the second before the Hounds rattled off two straight to reclaim the lead.
-Junior Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee) scored 12 seconds after Becker's lead goal to tie it up, assisted by junior Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H. / Keene) and sophomore Brad Anderson (Matawan, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic).
-Farrell took the lead, 3-2, in the fifth minute.
-In the ninth minute of the second period, Becker's Brandon Morgan tallied a short-handed goal to tie it up once again at three apiece.
-The Hounds fired three straight for the victory when Murphy took advantage of a power play in the 10th minute before senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) and Farrell each scored in the third for the 6-3 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Both Farrell and Murphy tallied two goals apiece while Picard and Bete added one each.
-Junior Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) notched a team-high three assists on the day while Mahoney, along with sophomore Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms) each posted two. Fennuccio, freshman Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood), freshman Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn. / Trinity Pawling) and Anderson each added one.
-Gomez led the offensive attack with nine shots and Bete followed with eight.
-Mahoney was successful on 20-of-25 faceoffs while overall, the Hounds went 60-for-107 in faceoff opportunities.
-Overall, the Hounds outshot Becker 66-42 and went 2-for-7 on power plays compared to 0-for-3 for Becker.
-Junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) posted 42 saves in 60 minutes between the posts while Becker's Tyler Stepke turned away 60 shots in 59:55.
