- The Lead: On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit to take a 61-52 home victory over Franklin Pierce University at Laska Gym. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Hounds as the team is now 6-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Ravens jumped out to a double-digit lead early behind 57.1 percent shooting from the field in the first quarter. Dyamond Gardner scored on a layup and after a missed free throw, she pulled down the rebound and scored on the putback for a 17-3 advantage with three minutes left in the period. Junior Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass./Reading) led the Hounds with four points in the quarter as the Ravens held a 19-7 lead after 10 minutes.
- Assumption cut the lead down to 20-13 with 5:57 left in the second after a layup from senior Ann Marie Idusuyi (Lynn, Mass./St. Mary's) and eventually made it a three-point margin after a three from junior Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity).
- The Ravens took a 24-19 lead into the break despite shooting just 21.9 percent from the field. The Hounds forced 11 Raven turnovers in the first half and held an 8-4 advantage on the offensive glass.
- Kara Charette extended the Raven lead back to double digits at 37-27 midway thru the third before Assumption began to chip away at the lead. The Hounds eventually cut the lead to 44-41 after three quarters of play after a free throw from senior Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) with just 0.7 seconds on the clock.
- The Hounds took their first lead of the game with 8:32 remaining as junior Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) knocked down a jumper for the 45-44 lead. Assumption took command of the game with a 21-2 run that spanned 12:01 as the Hounds led by as much as 11 at 57-46 with 1:19 left on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption shot 51.7 percent from the field and knocked down five three-pointers in the second half, en route to rallying from as many as 14 down for the win. Carey led the Hounds with 17 points for the game, while junior Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) had 11 points.
- Gardner led the Ravens with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kara Charette had 12 points.
- Assumption is ranked No. 16 in the D2SIDA National Poll and is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. In addition, the Hounds are ranked No. 2 in this week's D2SIDA East Region Poll.
