Winchendon, Mass. (February 16) -- After falling behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes, the Assumption College men's ice hockey team rallied for a 6-3 win over Franklin Pierce on Monday night, earning its first trip to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament since the 2011-12 season.
Junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) led the Hounds in scoring, firing two into the net, including the game-winner. Bete also posted an assist on the evening on the first Greyhound goal of the night, scored by sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley). Gomez scored once and added two assists in the victory.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 8-14 overall, 4-6 in NE-10 play, while the Ravens fall to 3-19-1 on the season, 2-7-1 in the league.
Franklin Pierce got out to an early lead on a power play opportunity just 5:10 into the first period before adding another just under five minutes later to earn a 2-0 advantage 10:03 into the match-up.
In the second frame, Assumption surged back from the deficit with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. Just 55 seconds into the period, Gomez notched the first goal for Assumption with a blast from the right point with the man advantage. At 5:14, freshman Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) took off on a partial breakaway and fired a snap shot from the right circle to the top-right corner to tie the score at two apiece.
Mahoney followed up with an assist to classmate Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) with less than three minutes left in the period to take the lead heading into the final 20-minute stretch.
The Ravens opened the third with an equalizing goal just 43 seconds into the stanza on a hard breakaway to the net by FPU's Blake Manginell. The squads remained tied for 12 minutes until Bete launched the first of two straight within 2:19. The junior nabbed a blocked shot rebound in the left circle to score his first of the night before Gomez found him in the left circle with less than five to play to add another. Bete took the pass from Gomez and finished with a swift wrist shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 5-3 Greyhounds.
The Ravens pulled goalie Kyle Moran late in the third after which senior captain Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) found the back of the net, assisted by classmate Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven High School) and sophomore Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pauling), for the final tally of the night at 19:30.
The Hounds are scheduled to play one final regular-season match-up on Tuesday, February 17 at Buffone Arena at 6:05 p.m. The contest will mark the Assumption College senior night and will be broadcast LIVE, for FREE, for the first time this season!
