Worcester, Mass. (February 17) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-3 final to Worcester State on Tuesday evening in their final regular-season match-up at Buffone Arena. Prior to the contest, the Hounds honored five graduating seniors: Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy), Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H. / St. Thomas Aquinas), Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles), Matt Dalton (Medway, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) and Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven).
Following Tuesday's loss, Assumption drops to 8-15 on the season while Worcester State improves to 5-14-2. With the regular season complete, the Hounds are now set to travel to Saint Michael's on Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinal.
The Hounds got out to a quick lead under six minutes into the first period when freshman Brad Anderson (Matawan, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) launched a high shot short of the left side of the goal. Sophomore Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H. / Keene) scooped up the puck and tapped it toward the back of the net near the bottom left corner, a shot that was ultimately deflected by freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) for the score. The goal marks Farrell's third of his inaugural season.
Assumption jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute on a power-play goal by Shaw before the Lancers reduced the deficit to one just 49 seconds later on an even-strength goal by Alex Pommerville. Worcester State tied it up with just five seconds left in the first frame to send the squads into the first break 2-2.
The Hounds regained the lead in the second. Just over one minute into the period, goaltender Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury) fired a pass from the back up to freshman Mike Sorenti (Sagamore Beach, Mass. / Archbishop Williams) to the left of the goal. Sorenti shook off a defender and fired a quick pass to the right corner, finding Shaw for the swift go-ahead goal.
Momentum shifted in the third period which saw Worcester State run up three unanswered goals for the eventual 5-3 win, including the game-winner in which Nathan Stanley lined up and fired from just inside the center of the blue line.
Overall, the Lancers outshot the Greyhounds 58-38 on the evening. The Hounds went a perfect 2-for-2 on power play opportunities while Worcester State capitalized on just 1-of-5.
Hemhauser racked up a season-high 53 saves in 59:26 between the pipes for a .914 save percentage on the night.
