Box Score Colchester, Vt. (February 18) -- On Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference play, the Assumption College women's basketball team won its second straight with a 75-54 road win over Saint Michael's College at the Ross Sports Center.
The Purple Knights took an early 9-7 lead over the opening six minutes, capped by a layup from Tomi Akinpetide, for the quick advantage. Assumption answered though with a quick 5-0 run behind a three from sophomore Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and eventually stretched the advantage into double digits. The Hounds staked to the 11-point lead with just 3:55 remaining in the period as junior Ann Marie Idusuyi (Lynn, Mass./St. Mary's) knocked down two free throws to make it a 28-17 advantage. The lead grew to as many as 13 at 30-17 before the Purple Knights closed the half on a 9-3 run for the 33-26 deficit at the break. The Hounds had a chance for one last shot to close the half, but the Purple Knights forced a turnover and turned it into a fast break layup by Makenzie Burud for two of her nine first-half points.
Over the period, the Hounds shot 44.8 percent from the field and converted nine Saint Michael's turnovers into 12 points to key the lead.
Assumption began the second period strong, extending the lead back to double digits at 37-26 in the first minute of play on back-to-back hoops from Idusuyi and senior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South). Overall during the first 7:02 of the half, the Hounds embarked on a 20-4 run that included four free throws from Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) and was capped by a fastbreak layup by sophomore Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity) for the 53-30 lead.
The Hounds extended the lead to as many as 28 at 61-33 on a layup by Idusuyi with 9:21 left, en route to the 21-point victory for Assumption.
Ackerman led five Hounds in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds, along with 12 points each from Stoddard and sophomore Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely). Carey and Idusuyi also finished in double figures with 10 points each.
Saint Michael's had three players finish in double figures, led by 19 points from Burud. Akinpetide ended the game with 12 points, while Maggie Sabine added 10.
With the win, Assumption improves to 14-10 overall and 9-10 in Northeast-10 play, while the Purple Knights drop to 11-13 overall and 6-13 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, February 21 as the Hounds host Saint Anselm College for a 1:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
