South Burlington, Vt. (February 21) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey season ended in the Northeast-10 Semifinals on Saturday evening as the Hounds fell to the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's by a score of 4-1. Freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) registered the lone goal for Assumption at 17:41 in the second period.
The Hounds got off to a strong start with Farrell and freshman Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) rushing into the zone for quick back-to-back shots, turned away by Saint Michael's goaltender Dave Donzanti.
The Assumption offense continued to threaten when junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) broke free on a a breakaway and fired from the right with a narrow miss at 2:10. It was the Purple Knights, however, who notched the first score of the contest on a swift shot from the right circle by Eric Salzillo at 6:41.
Junior goaltender Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury) notched numerous impressive saves on the evening, including a rocket from the blue line by Danny Divis with 3:28 left in the first. Hemhauser deflected another Golden Knight attempt with 17 left in the second before Josh Dickman snatched up the rebound for a quick score, making it 2-0 Saint Michael's.
The Saint Michael's offense dominated in the second period, outshooting the Hounds 19-4, but Farrell was able to fire past Donzanti on a follow-up to narrow the deficit to just one. The goal marked the only one of the period, coming at 17:41, and was assisted by Laughlin and classmate Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree).
The Purple Knights added to their lead just 1:57 into the third period on a quick shot from the bottom right corner, sneaking past Hemhauser for the 3-1 lead.
At 8:16, the Hounds nearly narrowed the deficit to one when senior Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven) fired toward the net, just barely missing the crossbar. The ensuing play resulted in a Greyhound power play, but the Purple Knights were able to bury the puck to register a their first short-handed goal of the season, and the final goal of the contest.
Assumption peppered the net in the last minute, including a narrow miss by junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) with 40 seconds on the clock, but ultimately failed in a comeback attempt that included an extra skater.
The Purple Knights outshot the Hounds 47-19 on the night while neither squad was able to capitalize on power-play opportunities.
Hemhauser notched a total of 43 saves in his 58:14 in net, compared to just 18 for Donzanti.
The loss ends the season for the Hounds. Assumption closes the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 8-16 while the Purple Knights improve to 9-15, advancing to the NE-10 Finals next weekend.
