Towson, Md. (March 30) -- On Sunday afternoon at the Towson Invitational, the Assumption College men's track and field team placed third overall out of eight schools as the Hounds captured four events and set one school record at the meet. Assumption finished with 107 points overall, finishing behind just Fairleigh Dickinson University and Essex CC.
Senior Tony Fierimonte (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) set the program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and met the NCAA provisional qualifying time as he won the event in 9:08.63. The time broke his own school record of 9:15.66, which he set while winning the 2014 Northeast-10 Championship at Stonehill.
Freshman Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) continued his outstanding rookie season as he won both the hammer throw and the shot put to pick up 20 points for the Hounds. Cerbo won the hammer by a six-foot margin, tossing 127 feet, five inches on his third of five throws to earn the victory. In the shot, Cerbo threw 44 feet, 11 inches on his second of six throws as he won that event by a margin of just over a foot. Junior Nathan Smith (Piermont, N.H./St. Johnsbury Academy) picked up top-three finishes in the two events as well as he was second in the hammer at 121 feet, five inches and third in the shot at 40 feet and one half inch. The Hounds had the top four spots in the hammer as sophomore Tim Jensen (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) was third in 119 feet, six inches and freshman Danny Tyszka (Coventry, Conn./Coventry) was fourth with a throw of 112 feet, 10 inches. Jensen also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 150 feet, two inches, while freshman Jason Rice (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) won the discus by just over eight feet with a throw of 123 feet, two inches. He was joined in the top five by Smith as he threw 105 feet, six inches.
On the track, sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11:24, while freshman Andrew Churchill (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) was third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.92 seconds. Butler and freshman Tyis Boykin (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) each finished among the top five in the 200 meters as Butler was fourth in 22.98, followed by Boykin in fifth in 23.68. Freshman Derek Field (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) crossed in third in the 400 meters in a time of 51.21 seconds, while junior Alex Smith (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) was the runner-up in the steeplechase as he ran a time of 10:44.19.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 4th as the Hounds travel to Springfield, Mass. to take part in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at American International College.
