Football Rallies for 41-37 Road Win at Kutztown in Opener

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: Assumption 41, Kutztown 37

- Records: Assumption (1-0); Kutztown (0-1)

- Location: Kutztown, Pa. (University Field - Andre Reed Stadium)

- The Lead: The Assumption College football team rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit and came away with a 41-37 non-conference road win at Kutztown University on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds took the lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter before the teams traded the lead back and forth five times in the period. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sophomore quarterback Brendan Tobey (Lynn, Mass./Malden Catholic) was tremendous in his debut, completing 22-of-31 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns. Included in his completions was a game-best 65-yard touchdown to sophomore Tyis Boykin (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) in the fourth quarter.

- Sophomore Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) was the top receiver for the Hounds, pulling in five catches for 115 yards. Freshman Deonte Harris (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) posted 10 catches in his Assumption debut, finishing with 81 yards and one touchdown.

- Junior Alex Shain (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) led the rushing attack for the Hounds with 131 yards and two touchdowns in 15 carries, including a career-best 62-yard rushing score up the right side that got Assumption on the board early in the second quarter.

- Defensively, junior captain Jarrod Casey (Milford, Mass./Bridgton Academy) led the team with 13 tackles (10 solo), along with an 11-tackle effort by junior defensive back Bakari Blunt (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Burke) as he also forced a fumble.

- In regular-season Division II play under third-year head coach Bob Chesney, the Hounds are now a perfect 10-0 in that stretch. Assumption has won in every Northeast-10 Conference stadium over the last two years, along with today's win at Kutztown.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Kutztown came out fast as the Bears scored on a six-play, 74-yard drive just 2:18 into the game as James Wah, Jr. found the end zone from 38-yards out as Kutztown built a 16-point halftime lead.

- Shain put the Hounds on the board with a 62-yard touchdown, while Boykin pulled in a 65-yard pass for the longest scoring play of the game by either team. The Shain touchdown was set up by an interception by Assumption sophomore Levi Fancher (Beacon Falls, Conn./Woodland Regional).

- The teams traded the lead five times in fourth, including the final score of the contest as Assumption senior James Ward (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) scored from nine yards out with 3:47 left for the 41-37 edge. The Hounds defense then turned the Bears over on downs to gain possession and eventually picked up a first down on a late offside penalty that allowed Assumption to run out the clock.

UP NEXT:

- Assumption is back in action on Saturday, September 12th as the Hounds travel to LIU Post for a Noon start in Brookville, N.Y. The Pioneers were picked first in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Hounds were chosen third. Assumption won the last game at LIU Post by a 37-27 final in 2013.
