THE BASICS:

-Score: Assumption 2, Cortland State 5

-Records: Assumption (7-7-2); Cortland State (7-6-3)

-The Lead: The Assumption College men's ice hockey team fell to Cortland State on Friday night by a final score of 5-2 to snap the Hounds' five-win streak. Assumption is back in action at home on Sunday at 4:35 against Wentworth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Red Dragons scored in the first 1:08 of the game for the lead before junior Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee), assisted by sophomore Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms), scored the equalizer in the ninth minute.

-Cortland scored once again in the first before the Hounds tied it again three minutes into the second period on a power-play goal by junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, NH / Kennett). Murphy was assisted by senior Pat Trainor (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) and freshman Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn. / Trinity Pawling) on the play.

-Cortland scored twice more before the end of the second before adding one more in the third for the 5-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Junior Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) led the Hounds' offensive attack with six shots on goal.

-Junior Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H. / Keene), senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) and sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) each posted four shots on goal on the night.

-Junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) tallied 42 saves in his 60 minutes between the posts while Cortland's Drew Weigman turned aside 37 shots in 59:49.

-Overall, the Red Dragons outshot the Hounds 47 to 39.

-Assumption went 1-for-7 in power-play attempts while Cortland was 2-for-4.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:

-The Hounds were riding a five-game win streak headed into Friday's game. The last time the Hounds had five straight wins was in the 1996-97 season.

-Murphy's goal marks his sixth of the season.

-Picard's goal is his seventh of the season.

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds return to action on Sunday, Jan. 17, as they host Wentworth for a 4:35 p.m. contest at Buffone Arena. The game will mark the first of three straight home games for Assumption.
