-The Lead: Six Greyhounds scored in the Assumption College ice hockey team's exciting 6-0 victory over Western New England University on Thursday evening at Buffone Arena. Junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) also registered his second shutout of the season in net en route to the Hounds' fourth consecutive win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds got out to a 1-0 lead when junior Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pawling) collected a rebound and backhanded the puck into the right side of the net, assisted by freshman Peter McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) and sophomore Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass. / The Governor's Academy).
-Just 37 seconds later, Assumption added to its lead when NE-10 leading goal scorer Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) notched his 13th goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca), for a 2-0 advantage.
-Sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) posted his sixth goal of the season 13:58 into the second period. Mahoney, assisted by senior Pat Trainor (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) and freshman Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn. / Trinity Pawling), took a pass at the center of the net and punched the puck in at point-blank range for a significant 3-0 lead.
-The Hounds continued to add to the lead with three more goals in the third period for the eventual 6-0 final.
-Senior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) scored his third goal of the season early in the frame (1:27) before back-to-back goals in the 13th minute by juniors Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) and Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee) completed the Hounds' scoring.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-The Greyhounds outshot the Golden Bears by a commanding 26-shot margin (62-36).
-Just one of Assumption's goals came on a power play as the Hounds went 1-for-8 in extra-man opportunities.
-Bete led Assumption's offense with three points on one goal and two assists.
-Mahoney was the only other Hound to tally multiple points on the day, registering one goal and one assist.
-Commesso posted 36 saves in his 60 minutes between the posts and improves to 5-2-2 on the season.
-Western New England goaltender Austin Keiser posted 53 saves in net and falls to 1-10-1 on the season.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-Commesso's shutout marks his second of the season.
-Bete now totals 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists and holds the top spot in the NE-10 in the category.
-Gomez now ranks second just behind Bete in the league standings with 20 points on six goals and 14 assists.
-Assumption holds all three of the top spots in the NE-10 in points scored as Farrell now posts 13 points on six goals and seven assists on the season for third.
-The Hounds' win over Western New England marks their fourth consecutive victory. Last season, Assumption's largest win streak was four wins from Nov. 30 at Nichols to Dec. 7 vs. Becker.
