No. 5 Stonehill Outlasts Field Hockey 3-2 in OT

THE BASICS

- Score: Stonehill 3, Assumption 2 (OT)

The Lead: Assumption fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half to pull even with No. 5 Stonehill, but the Skyhawks escaped with a win after scoring five minutes into overtime for a 3-2 victory on a rainy Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

- The score remained 0-0 through the first half, despite each team totaling eight shots. Stonehill's best offensive chance came on a breakawy attempt, but Sarah Bodzinski (Southwick, Mass. / Southwick Tolland Regional) charged the player and made a diving save to prevent the goal.

- Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minutes of action as Carly Andersen fed a pass to Kacie Smith. and she lifted it over Bodzinski who had gone down, expecting a low shot.

- The Skyhawks stretched their lead to 2-0 12 minutes later as Alexandra Gerew scored off a rebound in front.

- Assumption wouldn't be denied and less than one minute later, freshman Kristen McCarthy (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) scored off her own rebound in the goal mouth to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 13:34 left to paly.

- In the 60th minute, Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn. / Haddam-Killingworth) tied the game up on a shot from the top of the circle off a feed from Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass. / Quaboag Regional).

- Each team had chances in the final five minutes, but both goalies made big saves to force overtime.

- The fifth ranked Skyhawks pulled off the victory in the 75th minute on a goal by Justine Timmermans, taking by a 3-2 margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Stonehill had a 26-22 edge in shots, including a 6-1 advantage in overtime. The Skyhawks also totaled more penalty corners, 8-7, including three in the five minutes of overtime.

- Bodzinski was saddled with the loss, despite making 11 saves in net over 74:56. Sara Freedman won her seventh game of the year by stopping 12 shots in 74:56

- McCarthy's goal was her second overall, and it was the second consecutive game in which she has scored.

- Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, when the team hosts Southern New Hampshire at 7 pm.
