Men's Soccer Beats Southern Connecticut 3-2 in 2OT

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: Assumption 3, Southern Connecticut 2

- Record: Assumption (7-8, 6-5 NE-10), Southern Connecticut (6-6-2, 4-5-2 NE-10)

- Location: Worcester, Mass (Multi-Sport Stadium)

The Lead: After Assumption gave up a lead in the final minute of regulation, junior Connor Henry (Northborough, Mass.) came through with just 59 seconds left in double overtime to lift his Hounds to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Southern Connecticut State in a crucial conference matchup on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Assumption came out aggressive and was rewarded just 2:26 into the contest. Chase Gurcan (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) carried the ball into the corner of the 18 before feeding it to Simon Trcka (Prague, Czech Republic) at the top of the box. He turned and touched it backwards to a charging Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass.), who ripped a shot into the right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

- The Owls managed to tie the game up in the 40th minute as Louis Greenway Tambini scored from just inside the 18.

- The Hounds took back the lead in the 59th minute off a corner kick. Alex Moschella (Miller Place, N.Y.) sent the ball inside the six and Matt Gilson (Cumberland, R.I.) was able to control it with his body and then put a foot on it past the goalie for a 2-1 advantage.

- Clinging to the one-goal lead late, Assumption allowed Abri Akter to get the ball inside the box amidst a crowd of defenders and score with just 49 seconds left in regulation.

- Neither team had many chances in the first overtime, but Trcka nearly scored midway through the second overtime period. He received a through ball and tapped it around the charging goalie but it hit off the far post and bounced back into play.

- With double overtime winding down, Trcka dribbled the ball through defenders to the middle of the 18 before tapping it over to Henry on the far side corner of the box. Henry put just enough spin on the shot to slide around the charging keeper and into the far corner of the net for the game-winner with just 58 seconds left.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Hounds outshot the Owls 24-20 in the contest, and earned six corners. SCSU had four corners, but none after the first half.

- Freshman Brian Murray (Camas, Wash. / Camas) was solid in net as he made three saves and allowed two goals over 109:01 to secure the win. Noah Varonier was saddled with the loss as he stopped five shots and gave up three goals.

- The six conference wins is tied for the most for Assumption since 2009. The seven wins is also the most for the team since 2009.

- The game-winning goal by Henry was the first goal of his collegiate career.
