The Lead: 18th ranked Assumption trailed 7-0 after the opening 15 minutes, but responded with 24 points in the second quarter, and Dylan Oxsen (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth South) scored a career-high four touchdowns to propel the team to a 38--24 victory over New Haven in a critical Northeast-10 matchup on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption stalled on its first three drives of the game, and it was New Haven who got on the board first. The Chargers' Andre Anderson scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a nine-play 36 yard drive.
- The Hounds found their offensive groove at the end of the first and they got down to the two-yard line at the conclusion of the first quarter. Oxsen then scored just four seconds into the period to tie the game 7-7.
- Following a three-and-out, Assumption drove down inside New Haven territory before getting a 42-yard field goal from Cole Tracy (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) for the 10-7 lead at 11:36.
- Oxsen scored his second touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 8:28 left to cap off a seven-play 59 yards drive to extend it to 17-7, however, the Chargers responded with 21 seconds left to cut the deficit to 17-14.
- On the ensuing kickoff, Oxsen picked up the short kickoff at his own 36 and took it 64 yards for his first career kickoff return for a touchdown with just nine seconds remaining in the half for a 24-14 lead.
- In the third, Marc Monks connected with Dave Call (Springville, N.Y. / Saint Francis) for a 48-yard touchdown to make it 31-14, before New Haven answered later in the quarter to pull back within ten, 31-21.
- The Chargers then connected on a 30-yard field with 13:40 left in regular to close the gap to just seven points, 31-24. However, Assumption put together a 12-play 76-yard drive to put the game away, culminating in Oxsen's fourth touchdown of the day.
- New Haven came up empty on its final two drives, highlighted by a Kyle Contreras (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / John Jay / East Coast Prep) interception at his own one-yard line with 41 seconds left to secure the win for Assumption.
