The Lead: With four different goal scorers, the Hounds were able to seal a 4-2 victory over Becker to earn their first win of the 2016-2017 season on Sunday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms (Prep)) got on the board first for the Hounds when he netted an unassisted goal at 14:04 in the first period.
- The Hounds scored twice in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. The first goal came from Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / South Kent School (USPHL U18)) at 4:00 minutes, assisted by Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Washington Jr. Nationals (AJHL)) and Robert Roche (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)). Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn./ Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack (EHL)) then scored the second goal of the period at 13:10, assisted by Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass. / Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL Premier)) and Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass./ Boston Bandits (EHL)).
- The Hawks were shutout into the third period, but they were eventually able to convert on two powerplay opportunities. At 3:36 Connor Merrick scored Becker's first goal on the power play from a feed off of Connor Allison and Nicholas McKee.
- Four minutes later also on the power play, Assumption captain Kevin Murphy (North Conway, N.H./ Laconia Leafs (AJHL)) answered the Becker goal with Assumption's fourth and final goal of the game with an assist from Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn./ Trinity-Pawling (Prep)).
- Becker added one goal in the final ten minutes but couldn't get any more as the Hounds secured the two-goal win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption outshot Becker 35-32 in the game. Becker went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Hounds went 1-for-8.
- Sophomore Brian Nazzaro (Braintree, Mass./ Walpole Express (EHL)) made 30 saves in his first win of the 2016-2017 season, while Hawks goaltender Tyler Stepke made 31 save in his first loss.
