The Lead: Assumption jumped out to a 29-9 first quarter lead behind some stingy defense and hot shooting, as the Hounds opened up their 2016-17 campaign with a 78-42 victory over Post on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds came out firing and led 17-3 just 5:20 into the contest on a free throw from Morgan O'Donnell (Easton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy). Three minutes later they extended their lead to 24-17 on a triple by Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading) and a Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Greely) layup with 1:46 left before finishing the quarter with a 29-9 advantage.
- Assumption opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run, as Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) connected on a shot from beyond the arc with 6:27 left in the period. Post finally ended the scoring drought 19 seconds later, though the Hounds extended their lead to 33 points multiple times, including a three-point play by McKanna with just two seconds left in the half.
- In the third quarter Assumption pushed its lead as high as 35, though the team continued to sub liberally. Jo Impellizeri (Easton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) made a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds of the period for a 63-32 advantage after three quarters.
- The Hound defense played tough in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Eagles 15-10, with six points coming from Kiera O'Donnell (Cheshire, Conn. / Holy Cross) off the bench, for the 36-point victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption shot 40.0 percent from the floor and went 9-for-27 from downtown while limiting Post to just 26.3 percent shooting and a 0-for-4 mark from beyond the arc. The Hounds also outrebounded the Eagles 40-39 and dished off 17 assists, compared to three for the visitors.
- Assumption received 44 points from its bench and scored 38 points off turnovers, buoyed by their 11 steals in the contest.
- Four players scored in double figures, led by O'Brien with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting with three triples. Classmate Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) added 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals while Morgan O'Donnell chipped in six points, eight rebounds and two steals.
- McKanna finished with 11 points off the bench while Kiera O'Donnell had 11 points and six rebounds. Brittani LeBlanc (Townsend, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional) was solid in her first collegiate contest with seven points, five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
- Taylor Ceballos led post with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, as no other player scored more than eight points.
