The Lead: Assumption and UMass-Dartmouth were even at three apiece through the first two periods, but the Corsairs struck twice in the final 20 minutes and a last-second goal was too little, too late as the Hounds fell 5-4 on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Corsairs took a 1-0 lead at 7:12 on a goal by Brendan McDonough off assists from Jerry Laakso and Tanner Zacharewicz.
- Assumption tied up the game at 16:21 as Mike Sorenti (Sagamore Beach, Mass. / Archbishop Williams (MA HS)) slid a pass across the slot to Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Washington Jr. Nationals (AJHL)), who went top shelf for the 1-1 draw.
- In the second, UMD scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the period on goals by Mike Kelly and Steven Leonard for the 3-1 advantage.
- The Hounds fought back and closed within one on a power play goal by Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pawling (Prep)) with assists from Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood (Prep)) and Robert Roache (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)).
- Assumption evened the game up less than a minute later on a Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee (Prep)) goal off a feed from Sorenti.
- In the third it was the Corsairs who scored first once again. They took a 4-3 lead at 5:10 and then pushed their advantage to 5-3 seven minutes later.
- Assumption earned a power play in the final minutes but came up short and then pulled Brian Nazzaro (Braintree, Mass. / Walpole Express (EHL)) with just under two minutes remaining in hopes of drawing even. Skating with the man advantage, Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Boston Bandits (EHL)) finally scored with 1.2 seconds left, but it was too little too late.

- Assumption owned a slight 42-41 advantage in shots, despite getting outshot 19-10 in the opening period. The Hounds finished 1-for-4 on the power play while the Corsairs went 1-for-3.
- Picard led the offense with two points on one goal and one assist, while Sorenti added a pair of assists.
- Nazzaro took the loss in net as he stopped 36 shots, while Drew Michaels earned the win by making 38 saves.
