- The Lead: The Assumption College Women's Basketball team fell 81-78 in overtime during a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against Saint Michael's College today.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption scored the game's first five points as the Hounds opened up a 5-0 lead on Saint Michael's, highlighted by a three pointer by senior Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme). Two free throws by senior Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and a three pointer by sophomore Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) pushed Assumption's to seven (10-3). Saint Michael's closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to close out the period at 14-13.
- Saint Michael's scored the first basket of the second quarter to take its first lead of the game at 15-14, but Assumption ripped off an 11-0 run behind six points by Impellizeri. The Hounds tallied the last six points of the half as Stoddard hit a jump shot, senior Shayla Hubbard (Laconia, N.H. / New Hampton Prep) connected on a jumper and Impellizeri converted a layup to end the half up 35-22.
- Saint Michael's started chipping away at the lead in the third quarter, scoring the first six points of the stanza and eight of the first ten (37-30). The Purple Knights pulled within one point (41-40) before senior Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading) made a jumper and Impellizeri hit two free throws to bring the lead back up to five points (45-40). From there the two teams traded baskets before a three pointer by Leah Spencer with 18 seconds left in the third quarter gave the visitors a one point advantage (49-48). The Hounds inbounded the ball and let the clock run down before Stoddard pulled up and hit a three as time expired, giving Assumption a two point lead heading to the fourth quarter (51-49).
- The fourth quarter was tightly contested as no team held larger than a three point lead until 01:49 to play when Stoddard connected on two free throws to give the Hounds a 67-63 lead. Taylor Miller scored three consecutive points on a free throw and a layup and Indira Evora nailed a three pointer with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 69 apiece. Assumption came out of a timeout looking for the game winner, but they missed a jumper to head to overtime.
- Saint Michael's Emily Ferreri registered the first four points of the extra period as the Purple Knights opened up a 73-69 lead. A three pointer by senior Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) brought the score to 73-72, but the visitor's responded with a pair of free throws on the next possession. After Stoddard made a pull up on top of the key, the Purple Knights scored made two baskets to take an 80-75 advantage. Stoddard responded once again with a three pointer to pull Assumption with two points (80-78). Down three with 15 seconds to play, the Hounds were unable to find a basket, finishing the game at 81-78.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Impellizeri once again led Assumption on the offensive end, finishing with a game high 23 points to go with eight rebounds and two assists. Stoddard scored 17 points to go with five assists and four steals, while O'Brien added 11 points and five rebounds.
- Junior Kiera O'Donnell (Cheshire, Conn. / Holy Cross) led the Hounds on the boards, collecting nine rebounds to go with six points, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Morgan O'Donnell (Easton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) came off the bench to contribute ten points.
- Saint Michael's was led by Spencer who scored 23 points, while Samantha Delaney tallied 18 points. Ferreri was the only other Purple Knight to score in double figures, as she recorded 14 points.
- As a team, Assumption shot 48.3% (29-60) from the field, while holding Saint Michael's to 42.6% (29-68). The Hounds also connected on 7-17 (41.2%) from three point land, while limiting the Purple Knights to 16.7% (2-12).
- Assumption and Saint Michael's each committed 17 turnovers, while the Hounds were able to convert those turnovers into 16 points, as compared to 14 for the Purple Knights. Saint Michael's dominated on second chance points however, scoring 17 to the Hounds' seven.
