The Lead: Assumption jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter and extended it to 19 points after three quarters on the way to a hard-fought 67-59 upset of No. 11 Queens in non-conference action on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds shot their way to a 13-4 lead through the first four minutes, culminating in a layup by Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's). Queens responded with seven straight points, but Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading) connected on a triple at 3:21 for the 16-11 advantage. The Knights pulled within two in the final minute, though Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) rattled home a three for a 22-17 lead after one period.
- Assumption held Queens scoreless for almost four minutes to start the second and stretched its lead 33-17 on a three-point play by Morgan O'Donnell (Easton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy). The Hounds led by 16, 38-22, again at 5:14 on a three-point play from Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Greely), but were held scoreless the rest of the period. The Knights closed the gap to just 10, 38-28 at the half.
- Over the first four minutes of the third, Queens managed to cut the deficit to 44-37, before Storey and Stoddard hit back-to-back shots for the 48-37 lead with 5:38 left. The Hounds then outscored the Knights 14-2 over the final five minutes of the period to stretch their lead to 58-39 through three.
- Just 1:10 into the fourth, Teneya McLaughlin (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) scored on a jumper for the 60-39 lead, before Queens responded with nine straight to trim it to 12, just five minutes later. The Knight managed to pull within five, 62-57, with 1:24 left, but Assumption hit its free throws down the stretch to pull out the eight-point victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption shot 44.2 percent from the floor, including an impressive 7-for-15 from beyond the arc. Queens, meanwhile, made just 38.2 percent of its shots and only 3 of 15 from downtown while going 4 of 7 from the free throw line.
- The Hounds were outrebounded 40-36 and turned the ball over 21 times, but had 21 points off their bench, compared to just six for the Knights.
- Impellizeri led the offense with 14 points and four rebounds while Stoddard had 13 points, three steals and a pair of assists. McLaughlin, meanwhile, was all over the court with seven points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) added nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals while Storey came off the bench to supply seven points and four rebounds.
- Madison Rowland led Queens with 32 points, shooting 14-for-25 from the floor, while also adding ten rebounds, seven steals and four assists.
