- The Lead: The Assumption College Women's Basketball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 66-54 today in Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gymnasium. The Hounds have now won consecutive games after defeating No. 11 Queens College on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption struggled to score in the opening two minutes of the first quarter, as Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Back-to-back three pointers from senior Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) brought the Hounds to within three points (9-6) and two free throws from sophomore Morgan O'Donnell (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) made the score 9-8. Consecutive layups by O'Donnell and senior Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Greely) completed the Hounds comeback as they now led 12-11. Assumption ended the first quarter on a layup by Stoddard, giving the Hounds a 17-15 lead as the teams went to their respective benches.
- The Hounds caught fire to start the second quarter, using an 11-2 run to up their lead to 28-17. Assumption continued to attack the Penmen, as O'Donnell made two layups and sophomore Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) registered her first bucket of the game to give the Hounds a 32-19 advantage. Assumption's largest lead of the first half came when O'Donnell dribbled down the lane and made a layup as the lead ballooned to 14 points (36-22). The Hounds went into halftime up 38-25 when McKanna ripped an offensive rebound and put it back up with time expiring.
- In the third quarter, the two teams exchanged baskets as Assumption maintained its double-digit lead (43-31). After Southern New Hampshire cut the lead to nine points (47-38), junior Teneya McLaughlin (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) hit a layup to keep the lead at double-digits (49-38). Two free throws by Olivia Conrad ended the third quarter with a score of 51-43 in favor of the Hounds.
- Southern New Hampshire opened the fourth quarter determined to get back in the game, as the Penmen cut the deficit to six points (53-47). Senior Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading) drained threes in consecutive possessions for Assumption and McLaughlin hit one of her own as the Hounds took a commanding 62-51 lead with four minutes remaining in the contest. Layups by McLaughlin and Morgan O'Donnell gave Assumption its largest lead of the game at 15 points (66-51) with a minute remaining, before Kylie Lorenzen hit a three pointer to end the game with the score 66-54.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Stoddard led Assumption on the day with 15 points to go with two assists and a rebound. Morgan O'Brien contributed 14 points, while Morgan O'Donnell chipped in with 12. McLaughlin was the fourth member of the Hounds to tally double-digit points with 11.
- Morgan O'Donnell and McLaughlin led Assumption on the boards with eight each, while McLaughlin also led the Hounds with eight assists.
- Lorenzen led all players with 16 points while adding five rebounds. Olivia Conrad scored 10 points, while Brianna Camara led the team with six rebounds to go with eight points.
- As a team, Assumption shot 42.9% (27-63) from the field and 41.7% (10-24) from beyond the arc. Southern N.H. also shot an efficient 42.9% (21-49) from the floor and 40.0% (4-10) from three point land.
- Assumption won the turnover battle, 19-22, while converting those turnovers into 23 points. The Hounds also outrebounded the Penmen, 37-28, including a 15-6 edge on the offensive glass.
