The Lead: Assumption took control with a run midway through the first quarter, and only allowed Post to score more than ten points in a single quarter on the way to a dominant 86-43 road victory on Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Post actually led 6-4 in the early minutes, before Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading) connected on a triple at 6:16 to take back the lead for good. The Eagles kept it close, before Assumption outscored them 6-0 over the final three minutes of the quarter, with the final point coming on a free throw by Shayla Hubbard (Laconia, N.H. / New Hampton Prep).
- Hubbard hit a three-pointer to lead off the scoring for the Hounds in the second, and they extended their lead to 30-12 on a Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) shot from downtown midway through the period. The teams traded baskets over the final minutes with a Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) layup providing a 38-19 halftime advantage.
- Assumption opened the third on a 12-2 run to stretch its lead to 50-21 in just four minutes. The lead climbed as high as 23 on a Kiera O'Donnell (Cheshire, Conn. / Holy Cross) free throw, as the Hounds finished the quarter with a 61-29 lead.
- In the fourth, Assumption outscored Post 25-14 on 50 percent shooting from the floor, led eight points and four rebounds from Brittani LeBlanc (Townsend, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional), four from Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, N.J. / Washington Township) and two points, three rebounds and two assists from Katherine Golden (Millis, Mass. / Millis).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Hounds shot 43.5 percent from the floor in the contest while making just 6 of 18 three-pointers, but they limited Post to just 27.1 shooting and a 1-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.
- Assumption held a 51-44 rebounding edge, behind 14 offensive boards, while forcing the Eagles into 28 turnovers.
- Impellizeri led the offense with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists in just 21 minutes, while Kiera O'Donnell posted nine points, nine rebounds and two steals.
- Morgan O'Donnell (Easton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) was also in double figures with 11 points in just 13 minutes, while O'Brien chipped in ten points.
- Abriana Diana led Post with 13 points and was just one of two Eagles to score more than five points in the contest.
