The Lead: Assumption pushed its first-half lead over 25 points behind some hot shooting and again in the fourth quarter before finishing with a 69-61 victory over Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon in NE10 action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption scored the first ten points of the contest, punctuated with a triple from Teneya McLaughlin (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) at 7:19. The Ravens finally got on the board 40 seconds later and the teams traded baskets over the next six minutes. A layup by Kiera O'Donnell (Cheshire, Conn. / Holy Cross) made it 17-7 with 49 seconds left and the visitors went on a 5-2 run over the last 30 seconds for a 22-9 advantage through one.
- The Hounds opened the second quarter on a 16-2 run to stretch their lead to 38-11 on a layup by McLaughlin with 6:18 remaining. The lead went as high as 28 points, before Franklin Pierce rattled off 16 consecutive points over four minutes and went into the half down just 42-27.
- A 6-2 edge through the first five minutes of the third put Assumption on top 51-29. The Ravens managed to keep it right for the next three minutes, but the Hounds scored the final seven points of the period for a 57-38 advantage.
- Assumption scored the opening seven points of the third, to extend its lead to 64-38 with 8:37 left in the contest. Franklin Pierce responded with the next 18 points over six minutes to trail just 64-56 at 2:25. Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) ended the drought with a triple 25 seconds later. The Ravens closed within seven twice in the final 63 seconds, but the Hounds hit their shots down the stretch to come away with a 69-61 victory
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption shot an impressive 12-for-23 from downtown (52.2%) and 46.2 percent overall, but went just 9 of 15 from the foul line. Franklin Pierce shot 46.2 percent as well, while making 5 of 11 shots from beyond the arc.
- The Hounds outrebounded the Ravens 32-30 while dishing off assists on 20 of the team's 24 field goals.
- Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) led the offense with a double-double of 15 points, ten rebounds and three assists, while Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) scored 15 points, connecting on 4 of 6 three-point attempts.
- Carey was also in double figures with 12 points, four assists and three steals. O'Donnell did a bit of everything with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals while McLaughlin had seven points and five assists.
- Jemma Thacker came off the bench for Franklin Pierce to score 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting and four steals. Allison Palma added 12 points and nine rebounds.
