THE BASICS:

-Score: Assumption 1, Stonehill 6

-Records: Assumption (8-10-4, 2-5-1 NE-10); Stonehill (11-8-4, 7-0-2 NE-10)

-The Lead: The Assumption College ice hockey team fell to Stonehill College by a final score of 6-1 on Saturday night to drop to 8-10-4 overall, 2-5-1 in the NE-10. Sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) scored for the Hounds in the 13th minute of the second period for Assumption's lone goal of the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Stonehill got out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period after scoring twice in the first 10 minutes.

-In the second period, Stonehill extended its lead to 5-0 in the 11th minute on a power-play goal by Thomas DePoalo, his second of the game.

-Mahoney notched the Hounds' lone goal, with the assist from sophomore Brad Anderson (Matawan, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) and junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, NH / Kennett), at 13:24 to reduce the deficit to four.

-In the third period, DePaolo registered his third goal and a hat trick with the final goal of the game just 1:58 into the frame.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Despite the lopsided score, the Hounds were outshot by just three, 32-29. The Hounds even held the advantage in shots in the first period, 11-10, and in the third, 7-5.

-Assumption was 0-for-4 on power play attempts while Stonehill capitalized on two of four.

-Offensively, Mahoney and senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) led the Hounds in shots with four apiece.

-In net, junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) and senior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury) combined for 26 saves in 60 minutes, compared to 28 for the Skyhawks' Patrick Farrington.

UP NEXT:

-Assumption will travel to Saint Anselm for an NE-10 contest on Tuesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. The Hounds face the Hawks just once in the season so the game is for both points toward the NE-10 standings.
