The Lead: The Hounds were down 2-1 into the second half until an offensive surge led the Hounds to a 4-2 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas for their first win and home opener of the 2016 season
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hound's Chase Gurcan (Fort Salonga, N.Y./ St. Anthony's) began the scoring in the 23rd minute with a header off of a free kick from teammate Ethan Morrow (Huntington Beach, Calif./ Fountain Valley)
- The Spartans answered quickly with a goal by Michael Suflita when he headed the ball off a free kick from Alejand Coyt-Orozco
- To open the second half the Spartans scored first to take the lead 2-1 with a goal from Jonathan Garces, which was assisted by Brad Neal. The Spartans would remain scoreless for the rest of the game.
- Morrow tallied an assist and a goal when he scored off of a penalty kick after a Spartans defender had a hand ball in the box.
- Freshman Simon Trcka (Prague, Czech Republic/ Thornton Academy) scored his first goal in the 77th minute as a Hound by darting past a defender and shooting from the 18 yard line to take the lead 3-2. For his second goal of the game Gurcan made a move around a defender after a pass from teammate Alex Moschella (Miller Place N.Y./ Miller Place)in the midfield in order to score on his breakaway.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Hounds' freshman goalkeeper Brian Murray (Camas, Wash./ Camas) recorded his first win earning eight saves on the night. Spartans goalie Jack Nicholson was credited with the loss.
- Hounds offense totaled 16 shots in the game, while the Spartans offense had 20 shots.
