Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 9 AIC 5-0

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: Assumption 5, No. 9 American International 0

- Records: Assumption (5-4); American International (8-2)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Multi Sport Stadium)

- The Lead: Assumption's offense was held at bay for the first 30 minutes, but scored three times in the next 11 minutes to break open a close game on the way to a 5-0 non-conference shutout of American International on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities throughout the first half, as both defenses played solid.

- The Hounds finally broke through in the last five minutes of the period. They had a shot blocked, but corralled the rebound and Kristen McCarthy (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) found Meghan Sullivan (Worcester, Mass. / Notre Dame Academy) in front, where she one-timed it into the back of the cage at 30:05.

- McCarthy pushed the Assumption lead to 2-0 just three minutes into the second half on a feed from Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn. / Haddam-Killingworth), and then Sheahan made it 3-0 in the 41st minute. Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass. / Quaboag Regional) started the play, as she took the pass from the penalty corner at the top of the circle and passed it over to Sheahan on the wing, who fired it home.

- Four minutes later, Belle Ives (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet Regional) extended the lead to 4-0. She ripped a shot into the far corner of the cage off a cross from Sullivan, which bounced high off an AIC's defender's stick and right to her for the scoring opportunity.

- Kowslowski ended the scoring for the evening on a penalty corner attempt. Meagan Eccleston (Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich) dished off a pass from the top of the shooting circle to Koslowski on the left wing and she put it home for the five-goal advantage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption had an impressive 19-6 shot edge over the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets, including a 12-2 margin in the second half. The Hounds also earned five more penalty corners, 8-3, in the game.

- Four different players had three points on the evening, as Koslowski, McCarthy, Sheahan and Sullivan each totaled one goal and one assist. The goal for McCarthy was the first of her collegiate career.

- Sarah Bodzinski (Southwick, Mass. / Southwick Tolland Regional) earned her fourth win of the season with three saves, including one stop in the final seconds of regulation to perserve the shutout. Taylor Ross took the loss as she allowed four goals and made four saves in 46:49. She was replaced by Chelsea Lombardo, who stopped two shots and allowed one score in 23:01.

UP NEXT:

- The Hounds are back in action on Saturday, October 1st as they host No. 5 Stonehill in a crucial NE-10 matchup at 6 pm.
