Box Score
THE BASICS:
- Score: Saint Anselm 2, Assumption 1 (OT)
- Location: Manchester, N.H. (Melucci Field - Catholic Cup)
- The Lead: Assumption took the early lead but was unable to hold on as Saint Anselm pulled out a 2-1 win in overtime during the final day of the Catholic Cup.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass./Martha's Vineyard Regional) continued his terrific rookie campaign for Assumption as the forward scored his third goal of the young season in the 46th minute. The goal put the Hounds up 1-0 as Lages was able to control a long ball over the top of the defense and tuck it into the lower corner.
- Saint Anselm sophomore forward Emmet O'Callaghan scored in the 72nd minute to tie the game up at a goal apiece. O'Callaghan found himself wide open for the tap-in when senior forward Zach Heckt played a ball across the goal line.
- The Hawks duo also combined for the game winning goal when O'Callaghan played a ball to Heckt which put the senior in on a one-on-one situation with freshman goalkeeper Brian Murray (Camas, Wash./Camas). Heckt calmly slipped the ball past Murray to give the host the consolation game victory in the 2016 Catholic Cup.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Lages has been on a tear since stepping foot on the pitch for Assumption. The freshman has now accounted for three out of the four goals for the Hounds after the first two games of the season.
- Both teams were cautioned twice with yellow cards, while the teams also took five corner kicks each.
- Lages and Murray were both named to the Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team.
UP NEXT:
- The Hounds are back in action next Saturday, September 10th at 1:00 p.m. as Assumption hosts St. Thomas Aquinas at the Multi-Sport Stadium for their home opener.
