No. 21 Assumption Takes Down Kutztown 45-21

THE BASICS

The Lead: No. 21 Assumption put on an impressive showing in its season opener, scoring 24 points in the first half and allowing just 13 points over the final 55 minutes of action to come away with a 45-21 victory over Kutztown on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Golden Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes, but the Hounds responded just over two minutes later as Marc Monks (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) found Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn. / East Coast Prep) in the back of the endzone to the game 7-7.

- Grant and Monks hooked up for another touchdown with 2:51 left in the first, and Assumption wouldn't trail again.

- Kutztown scored with 6:22 left in the second to pull within one, 14-13, but the extra point went wide to preserve the one-point lead.

- Cole Tracy (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) made a 22-yard field goal with 4:15 left for the 17-13 lead and then Alex Shain (Sanford, Maine / Sanford) capped a seven-play 53-yard drive with a four-yard plunge with just 46 seconds remaining in the half for an 11-point lead at the half.

- Kutztown closed the gap to three points at 8:56 of the third quarter, when Craig Reynolds scampered in from 18 yards out and the Golden Bears connected on the two point conversation for a 24-21 score.

- The Hound defense didn't allow another point the rest of the way and third quarter touchdowns by Shain and Grant stretched the lead to 38-21 after 45 minutes of action.

- Dylan Oxsen (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth South) punctuated a 15-play drive midway through the fourth for the final touchdown of the game to provide the 45-21 margin. Senior Jarrod Casey (Milford, Mass. / Bridgton Academy) added an interception in the endzone on the ensuing Kutztown drive to seal the 24-point victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

- The Hounds outgained KU 482-315, with a balanced offense of 207 rushing yards and 275 passing yards on 83 total offensive plays. The defense, meanwhile, gave up just 3.5 yards per carry and forced eight punts in the contest.

- Grant had a record day catching the football, setting career highs with 13 catches for 164 yards. He also added three touchdowns. Grant also added a 22-yard punt return for 184 all-purpose yards on the day. His 164 receiving yards moves him into fifth place all-time in receiving with 1,575 yards, passing former Hound Scott Simonson (1,537).

- Monks completed a number of tough throws, as he finished 25-for-26 (69.4%) for 267 yards, three touchdowns and a single interception. He also added a 25-yard rush and finished with 32 yards on the ground.

- Shain was a workhorse with 23 of the team's 46 rushing attempts. He averaged 4.9 yards per rush for 113 yards total and two touchdowns.

- For Kutztown, Terence Scanlon went 15-for-28 for 177 yards with, two touchdowns and one interception. He had five different receivers catch a pass, including Kellen Williams who had three receptions for 33 yards and one touchdown.

- Defensively for KU, Tajier Jefferson led the team with 12 tackles while Kenny Williams was also in double figures with 11. b added four stops and the team's lone sack.

- Casey made his presence felt for the Hounds, with a team-high 11 tackles and the interception. Ray Sarkodieh (Worcester, Mass. / St. Peter Marian) was strong on the defensive line with eight tackles and 0.5 sacks while Andrew Benson (East Bridgewater, Mass. / East Bridgewater) added six tackles and two pass breakups
