The Lead: Although Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Walpole Express (AJHL)) made 42 saves in net for the Hounds, three third-period goals lifted the Falcons of Fitchburg State to a 5-4 victory over the Hounds on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just 59 seconds into the first period senior Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn./ Trinity-Pawling (Prep)) found the back of the net off a shot from the top of the circle assisted by Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass./Boston Bandits (EHL)).
- At 15:59 Falcon defenseman Joshua Suboyu netted a shot from the point assisted by Tyler Warila and Ricky Kramer to tie the game 1-1.
- Then at 13:04 into the second, freshman defenseman Ben Barton (Kenai, Alaska / Cushing Academy (Prep)) netted his first collegiate goal off wrist shot from the point assisted by Mike Sorenti (Sagamore Beach, Mass. / Archbishop Williams (MA HS)) and Stephen Picard (Enfield Conn./ Loomis Chaffee (Prep)).
- Once again the Falcons answered quickly to tie the game 2-2 when James Gordon scored on a 2-on-1 assisted by Jon Johannesson.
- At 6:09 junior Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / South Kent School (USPHL U18)) crashed the net to score a goal assisted once again by Sorenti and Picard.
- With just 30 seconds left in in the second Mahoney scored from the slot with a feed from Peter McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa./ Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL)) to make the score 4-2 heading into the third.
- Just 26 seconds into the third Gordon netted his second goal of the game to bring the Falcons within one, and shortly after Mike Fretz tied the game 4-4 after scoring on a pass from Joshua Larsen.
- The Falcons scored the eventual game winning goal when Fretz came through on powerplay to make it 5-4 at 9:03. Assumption wasn't able to draw even over the final 11 minutes, despite pulling Commesso in the final minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fitchburg outshot Assumption 47-37 and went 1 for 3 on the powerplay while the Hounds went 0 for 4.
- The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Assumption.
- Falcon goaltender Charles Jakobsson made 33 saves in the win while Commesso made 42 saves in the loss.
