The Lead: Hound forward Mike Sorenti (Sagamore Beach, Mass. / Archbishop Williams (MA HS)) scored twice to lead the Hounds to a 4-3 victory over Southern New Hampshire in a crucial NE10 conference match up on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just 4:40 into the first period Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms (Prep)) scored on the power play assisted by Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass./Boston Bandits (EHL)) to put the Hounds up 1-0.
- At 11:30 Penmen forward Jay Sylvia scored assisted by Joe Collins and Kyle Valliere to tie the game 1-1.
- A second Southern New Hampshire power play would lead the Penmen to a 2-1 lead as Jared Goudreau netted a goal assisted by Collin and Chris Moquin.
- With 2:27 left, Sorenti found the back of the net on the power play tying the game 2-2 to head into the second.
- At 11:06 in the second, Sorenti scored his second of the game assisted by Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y./South Kent School (USPHL U18)) and Robert Roche (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)) to take the lead 3-2.
- The Penmen tied the game 3-3 in the third when forward Nathan Bergeron found the back of the net assisted by Artem Efimov-Barakov and Alec Cochran.
- Just 2:24 later the Hounds answered with the game-winning goal by Mahoney for a 4-3 lead and the defense held off the Penmen over the final minute even after they pulled their goalie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption out shot Southern New Hampshire 50 to 37 while going 4 for 8 on the power play.
- Sorenti tallied two goals while Mahoney added a goal and an assist.
- Hound goaltender Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Walpole Express (AJHL)) made 34 saves in the win while Penmen goaltender Ryan Slatky made 46 saves in the loss.
