THE BASICS:

- Score: Assumption 63, No. 14 Adelphi 58

The Lead: Assumption led No. 14 Adelphi for most of regulation, but needed a last-second basket to force overtime tied at 54-54. In the extra session, senior Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) came up with some big shots to propel the Hounds to a 63-58 upset victory on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Assumption jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the opening six minutes following a three from Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass. / Reading). Adelphi trimmed the deficit to 11-7 at 3:05 and trailed just 14-8 with 51 seconds left in the period. Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) came through with a driving layup and Brittani LeBlanc (Townsend, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional) stole the ball near midcourt and took it in for the fastbreak layup with 18 seconds remaining for an 18-8 advantage after one.

- Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) opened the second quarter with a layup and three minutes later O'Brien extended the lead to 23-9 with a triple at 6:46. The Panthers cut the deficit to 23-13 at 4:44, but O'Brien connected on another shot downtown for the 13-point advantage. Adelphi did cut it to 29-18 with 1:30 left and went into the half down 32-21.

- Trailing 34-23 two minutes into the third, the Panthers responded with 12 straight points to take their first lead, 35-34 with 2:19 left in the period. Stoddard tied the game on a free throw and Assumption scored the final five points of the third for a 39-35 lead through three quarters.

- Adelphi trimmed the deficit to just 42-41 2:13 into the fourth, but Stoddard went on a personal 6-2 run with a pair of threes for the 48-43 advantage at 7:04. The Panthers responded with nine straight to take a 52-48 lead with 1:44 left in regulation.

- Stoddard made a pair of free throws to pull within two and after two missed free throws by Adelphi, Shayla Hubbard (Laconia, N.H. / New Hampton Prep) hit a jumper to tie it 52-52 with 34 seconds remaining. The Panthers responded with a layup, but Carey tied the game off a great inbound pass from Stoddard with seven seconds left. A last-second shot was off to send the game to overtime.

- The Panthers took an early lead in the extra session, but five straight points gave Assumption back the lead. Adelphi pulled within one, but two possessions later Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Greely) made two free throws for a 61-58 advantage. The defense forced another miss and Carey was fouled with just three seconds left. She made both free throws for the five-point win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption held the Panthers to just 18.5 percent shooting in the first half and the visitors finished the game at 36.1 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from downtown. The Hounds, meanwhile, shot 37.3 percent from the floor and hit 9 of 27 triples.

- The Panthers held a 43-37 edge on the boards, but committed 17 turnovers compared to 15 for Assumption.

- Stoddard paced the team with 16 points, three assists and two steals while O'Brien had 12 points on four triples. Carey supplied ten points and four rebounds while Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) put up nine rebounds, three points, two assists and two steals.

- Calli Balfour paced Adelphi with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals while Sierra Shrader had ten rebounds but just five points.
