- The Lead: Senior Marc Monks (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) threw for four touchdowns in the first half and No. 17 Assumption put up 28 second-quarter points to blow open a close contest on the way to an impressive 55-10 victory over Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption scored on its first possession of the game. Monks put the Hounds in scoring position when he found Deonte Harris (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) down the sideline for a 40-yard pass to the 16-yard line. Three plays later, the two connected again for a 12-yard touchdown strike for a 7-0 lead with 12:16 left in the period.
- Kyle Contreras (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / John Jay / East Coast Prep) made a big stop on fourth down at his own 23-yard line to give the offense back the ball. The Hounds took the ball 77 yards in eight plays, culminating in a two-yard touchdown pass from Cody Williams (Wilbraham, Mass. / Springfield Central / Monmouth) to Diamonte Robinson (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill /Monroe) for a 14-0 advantage.
- Saint Anselm got on board with a field goal, but Assumption answered back quickly. On second down, Monks hit Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn. / Manchester / East Coast Prep) on a slant for a 24-yard completion and then one play later lofted a ball over the defense to Grant for a 28-yard TD to make it 21-3.
- The Hawks got great field position on an Assumption fumble, taking the ball down to the two-yard line and then scoring a touchdown two plays later to make it 21-10 with 11 minutes left in the second.
- Assumption took its next drive down to the Saint Anselm 31-yard line on four Dylan Oxsen (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth South) rushes before Monks found Kevin Falaki (Assonet, Mass. / Apponequet Regional) right up the middle for the 31-yard touchdown. The defense then forced a three and out, and the Hawks punted it to Harris at his own 13. He weaved through defenders and took it back for the 87-yard touchdown.
- The Hounds stretched their lead to 42-10 less than two minutes later. Monks connected with Grant for a 41-yard touchdown pass over the top of the defense.
- In the second half, Assumption received the opening kickoff and drove down to the Saint Anselm six-yard line, but was unable to convert on third down. Cole Tracy (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) did convert on the 28-yard field goal for a 45-10 lead.
- Sophomore Doug Santos (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial) added a four-yard touchdown run with 7:33 left in the third and Tracy connected a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for a 55-10 lead. The defense, meanwhile, held strong to preserve 45-point lead.
INSIDE THE NUBMERS:
- Assumption totaled 530 yards of offense in the contest, including 352 through the air and 178 on the ground. The team also had a season-high 30 first downs and were 8 of 10 on third down. Defensively, they gave up 229 yards of offense, with just 53 coming through the air and 176 rushing. The Hawks were just 2 of 12 on third down.
- Monks was dominant, going 14-for-15 in the first half and finishing the game 17 of 19 for 319 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. With his four touchdowns, he established a new career record for touchdown passes with 49, breaking the record set by Chad Carges in 2001. He almost moved into second all-time in passing yards with 5,142 yards.
- Grant caught six passes for 161 yards and two scores while Harris totaled six receptions for 71 yards and one score to go with his 87-yard punt return for a touchdown and 41-yard kickoff return. Grant's six catches give him 200 for his career, just the second Hound to reach that milestone.
- Oxsen led the team with 58 rushing yards on nine attempts while Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy / Trinity Pawling) ran for 45 yards on six attempts.
- Charles Williams III (Hartford, Conn. / A.I. Prince Technical) led the defense with ten tackles, including 2.5 stops for a loss. Bryce Jacob (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) was second with seven stops while Shawn Springs Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J. / Timber Creek Regional / Milford Academy) had three tackles, one interception and one pass breakup.
