No. 12 Football Grounds Skyhawks 68-0

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 12 Assumption 68, Stonehill 0

- Records: Assumption (8-0, 7-0 NE10), Stonehill (4-4, 3-4 NE10)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Multi-Sport Stadium)

- The Lead: No. 12 Assumption scored 34 points in the second quarter and finished with the second-highest scoring game in school history behind a complete team effort, shutting out Stonehill 68-0 on Saturday afternoon. The victory also clinched at least share of the NE10 Championship for the Hounds, their second NE10 Championship in the past three years.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Hounds put together 10-play 80-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead on their first possession. They moved the ball down the field to the six-yard line and Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy / Trinity Pawling) broke multiple tackles and ran up the middle for the score.

- Assumption added to its lead on the next possession. The drive stalled at the 34, but Cole Tracy (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) came on and easily hit a 53-yard field for the 10-0 advantage. The kick established a new school record, breaking his old one of 52, set in 2015.

- On the Hounds' first possession of the second quarter, Exum-Strong took the handoff from his own 21-yard line and went around the left side. He found a seam, fought out of a few tackles before sprinting down the sideline for the 79-yard score and 17-0 lead.

- On the ensuing kickoff, Vincent Conetta (Sarasota, Fla. / Cardinal Mooney) forced the ball loose and Calvin Milner (New York, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) pounced on the ball. Assumption wasn't able to punch it in the endzone, but Tracy connected on the 27-yard field goal for the 20-0 advantage with 11:37 left.

- The defense forced another 3-and-out and took over deep in their own end. On third down, Deonte Harris (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) caught a short pass from Brendan Tobey (Lynn, Mass. / Malden Catholic) and he weaved through the defense, moving from the left side of the field to the right and out-running the defense for the 63-yard touchdown.

- Assumption pushed its lead to 34-0 with 4:31 remaining in the second. Cody Williams (Wilbraham, Mass. / Springfield Central / Monmouth) kept the ball on the option and went around the left side for the four-yard touchdown.

- Another stop by the defense forced Stonehill to punt. Harris took the bouncing punt at the 23-yard line and made his way through the defense, eluding multiple defenders while running across the field before sprinting past the last defenders for a 77-yard punt return touchdown. Tracy concluded the scoring for the half when he booted a 49-yard attempt with just three seconds remaining for a 44-0 advantage.

- Dylan Oxsen (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth South) scored on a 10-yard touchdown run on the team's first possession of the third and Tracy made a 49-yard field with 7:47 left in the third for a 54-0 advantage.

- In the fourth Stonehill moved down to the 20-yard line, but Ja'Quez Johnson (Brick, N.J. / Brick Township) stripped the wide receiver after his catch and Mason Spence (Boston, Mass. / Episcopal) picked up the ball, running it back to the 15-yard line. Williams scored his second touchdown four plays later.

- Spence helped conclude the scoring in the final 80 seconds. The sophomore picked off a pass at his own 33-yard line and nearly took it to the house, but he had the ball knocked out. Noah Burke (Worcester, Mass. / St. Peter-Marian / Worcester Academy) pounced on the ball in the endzone for the touchdown and 68-0 lead with just 1:06 left.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption's 68 points on the day were the second-most in program history, trailing just the 71 points the team totaled against St. Anselm on Sept. 15, 2007. The 68-point win is the largest margin of victory in program history, surpassing the team's 56-point win over Pace earlier this year.

- The Hounds totaled 426 yards of offense on the day while Stonehill had just 234 total yards, despite running 14 more plays than Assumption (71-57) and possessing the ball for 35:22. Assumption passed for 206 yards and rushed for 220 yards on 38 attempts.

- Tobey went 7-for-13 for 150 yards and one touchdown, while Sam Blake (Springfield, Mass. / East Longmeadow / Williston Northhampton) caught four passes for 67 yards. Harris totaled a season-high 221 all-purpose yards with 89 receiving, 90 punt return, 34 kickoff return and eight rushing yards to go with two touchdowns. His punt return touchdown gave him five for the season, tying the NCAA DII record, set back in 1998. He now has had a punt return touchdown in three straight games.

- Exum-Strong rushed for 101 yards on just five carries with two touchdowns while Oxsen had 15 attempted for 39 yards and Williams added 24 more.

- The defense had five turnovers on the day, with four forced fumbles and one interception. Johnson led the defense with nine solo tackles in his first career start, while Bryce Jacob (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) added eight tackles and Chris Caraballo (Staten Island, N.Y. / Monsignor Farrell) had seven stops with a tackle for a loss.

- Tracy finished with four field goals and eight extra points for 20 points, one off his career high and his own NCAA record of 21 points set earlier this year. Harris, meanwhile, returned a punt for a touchdown for the third consecutive game and has four total over that span.

- Today's victory, secured Assumption at least of a share of its second NE10 Championship in the last three years. A win next Saturday against AIC would give the Hounds the outright NE10 Title.

UP NEXT:

- Assumption returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to play AIC at 12 pm.
