Lead: The Assumption College ice hockey team scored two goals in the first period, but Becker answered with seven consecutive goals in the second and third periods to to defeat the Hounds 7-2 in the home opener on Sunday evening in a non-conference contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just 12:03 into the first period Mac Carnes (Farmington, Conn. / Springfield Pics (USPHL Premier)) scored an unassisted goal to take the 1-0 lead and just 2:02 later sophomore John McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa. / Shady Side Academy (Prep)) extended the lead to 2-0 as he netted a short handed goal off an assist from senior Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / South Kent School (USPHL U18).
- The Hounds remained scoreless for the remainder of the game. James Wallace scored back to back goals in the first six minutes of the second for Becker while Charles Costello added another later in the period.
- In the third, the Hawk offense continued to pressure the Assumption defense and tally four more goals for the 7-2 final. Aaron Deady scored the fourth goal, and then Becker scored three consecutive power play goals. Wallace picked up his third goal on the night while Corey Schafer and Brian Greene each tallied their first goals of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption out shot Becker 14-10 in the first period but the Hawks held a 27-14 advantage in the last two periods. The Hounds did not score a goal on the power play while the Hawks went 4-for-8.
- Becker goaltender Grant Martens made 26 saves in his first win of the 2017-18 season while Assumption goaltender David Zulauf (Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) made 21 saves in the loss. Sophomore goaltender Robbie Campbell (Raritan, N.J. / New England Stars (NA3HL)) entered the game with 12:40 left and recorded 13 saves.
