Lead: Junior Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood (Prep)) scored a goal and added two assists as the Hounds fell 8-5 to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Five goals were scored in the first period as Southern New Hampshire claimed a 3-2 lead. Just 2:43 into the game, Matt McLelland scored to take the 1-0 lead, and about six minutes later Assumption defenseman Robert Roche (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)) scored assisted by Peter McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa./Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Elite)) and Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Boston Bandits (EHL)) to tie the game 1-1. Over the next three minutes, the Penmen scored two consecutive goals by Chris Moquin and Timothy Baylis to take the 3-1 lead, but an Assumption goal by Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn. / Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack (EHL)) with 8:55 left in the first would end the period 3-2.
- Southern New Hampshire went on to out score Assumption 2-1 in the second period with goals by Zack Ciampa and Alec Cochran. Senior forward Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / South Kent School (USPHL U18)) netted a goal off an assist from Damelio to head into the third period down 5-3.
- The Penmen opened the third period with a goal by Steven Dumond with 13:30 remaining, but Assumption answered with back-to-back power play goals by Damelio and senior Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass./ Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL)) to come within one. 43 seconds later Baylis tallied his second goal of the night to reclaim the to two goal lead. The Hounds pulled goaltender David Altman (Bristol, R.I. / Northern Cyclones (EHL)), and Griffin Connor scored to end the game 8-5 and take both games in the weekend series.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Penmen outshot Assumption 40-28, but the Hounds scored on two power plays and killed off both Southern New Hampshire power play opportunities.
- Southern New Hampshire goaltender Ryan Slatky made 23 saves in the win, while Hounds goaltenders Robbie Campbell (Raritan, N.J. / New England Stars (NA3HL)) and Altman split time to combined for 32 saves.
