HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a triple by Abby McKanna (Narragansett, R.I. / Narragansett) at 7:38, before four straight points by the Hawks pulled them within one with 6:36 left in the period. The Hounds responded by going on an 11-2 run the rest of the quarter for a 16-6 lead.
- St. Anselm cut the deficit to just 11, 21-10, at 7:01 of the second but the Assumption defense didn't allow another point for over six minutes. The Hound offense kept rolling and extended their lead as high as 20 points with 38 seconds left in the half on a fastbreak jumper by Shayla Hubbard (Laconia, N.H. / New Hampton Prep). The Hawks ended their scoring drought with 19 seconds left to go into the half and trailed 30-12 at the break.
- In the third, McKanna, extended the lead to 20 at 5:57 and then three minutes later made it 41-20 on a triple. The teams then traded baskets before St. Anselm scored the final three points of the third to trail by 18 going into the final ten minutes.
- The Hawks scored the first nine points of the fourth, closing the gap to 43-34 and forcing an Assumption timeout at 6:42. Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) ended the run with a layup at 6:05 and the Hounds extended the lead back to 15 with 3:27 left in regulation. St. Anselm responded with consecutive threes to cut the deficit to 49-40 with two minutes remaining. However, Assumption didn't let the home team get any closer than six the rest of the way as they held on for the 55-46 win.
