The Lead: The Assumption College field hockey team produced five different goal scorers as they droppped Bentley 5-1 in their NE10 conference home opener on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Belle Ives (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet Regional) put the Hounds ahead 1-0 just 4:36 into the game. She picked up a rebound off a shot from sophomore Courtney Sickel (Atkinson, N.H. / Timberlane Regional) and was able to lift it over Falcon goaltender Jana Mones to score her first goal of the season.
- Just 2:28 later Bentley forward Janelle Magoon took advantage of an open net to score and tie the game up at 1-1.
- The Hounds fought back with four unanswered goals. With 9:50 left in the first half, senior Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam -Killingworth) registered her first goal of the season which was assisted by classmate Ashley Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass/Agawam), and just 5:11 later sophomore Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) put the Hounds up 3-1 as she chipped a loose ball over Mones.
- With a 3-1 lead heading into the second half, freshman Shannon Quinlan (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville North) tipped in a shot from Sheahan to make the score 4-1 and 1:15 later sophomore forward Kristen McCarthy (Danvers, Mass./ Danvers) added an unassisted goal.
- With 7:37 left in the game, Bentley forward Claire Virkler Wide was awarded a penalty stroke but she hit the post ending the game 5-1 in favor of the Hounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Hounds offense out shot the Falcons 25-10 and produced four more penalty corners.
- Bodzinski made seven saves in the win, while Mones made 12 saves in the loss.
UP NEXT
- Next Wednesday, September 20 the Hounds will travel to Merrimack for a 4:00 pm start.
