The Lead: After being down a goal in the first half, the Assumption men's soccer team fought back to score two unanswered goals to defeat Saint Michael's 2-1 on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Michaels took a 1-0 lead 13:57 into the first half when Purple Knight forward Andres Rivas beat a defender and ripped a shot to the far corner of the net, beating a stretching Brian Murray (Camas, Wash./Camas).
- In the second half the Hounds scored two unanswered goals to win the game. At 33:26, Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass./Marthas Vineyard Regional) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game 1-1 after he found the back of the net on a loose ball infront of the net.
- In the 77th minute, freshman Mauro Cortez (Providence, R.I./La Salle Academy) tallied his first collegiate goal, and the game winner after Lages fired a shot that Leland Gazo saved off of the crossbar. The ball ricocheted back to the six yard box where Cortez lined it up and hit a bicycle kick to put the Hounds up 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Murray imporved his record to 4-4 and made nine saves, while Leland made six in the loss.
- The Assumption offense produced four corner kicks and 15 shots while Saint Michael's took 18 shots and two corner kicks.
