Men's Soccer Comes Up Short Despite Strong Second Half Against Adelphi

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 4 Adelphi 2, Assumption 1 (OT)

- Records: No. 4 Adelphi (9-0-1, 5-0-1 NE10), Assumption (6-4-0, 4-3-0 NE10)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Multi-Sport Stadium)

- The Lead: After the Assumption Greyhounds controlled most of the second half, tying the game at one in the process, Aidan Keenan scored the game-winning goal just 3:11 into overtime to lead the No. 4 Adelphi Panthers 2-1 over the Hounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Panthers scored just 3:11 into overtime on a cross pass from Paolo Marciano. Marciano sent the ball to the left side of the field to Taylor Kaczynski only a couple yards out from the net. Kaczynski dished it off to Keenan, who put a quick touch to the ball and sent it home for the game-winner.

-The goal came after Assumption controlled much of the second half. They had 52% of total possession and played with the ball in the offensive zone 46% of the time, forcing Adelphi to make three saves on seven shots in the second half. The Hounds even tied the game at one on a great possession that ended with a goal by Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass. / Martha's Vineyard Regional). The play began with Jeremy Martin (Hopedale, Mass. / Hopedale) gaining possession with an open field. He dished it off into the right corner to Juan O'Neill (Guaynabo, P.R. / Colegio San Ignacio), who put the ball into the air and straight to Lages, who gave the ball a winding kick into the back of the net to tie the game.

-Adelphi had taken an initial 1-0 lead just 6:13 into the game. Kaczynski scored on a high ball that went over an outstretched arm of Sebastian Jimenez (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast High School) for the first goal of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Adelphi held a 20-13 shot advantage and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lages shared a team-high four shots, while placing three of them on goal.

-Lages' goal gives him two in his last two games and five on the year. He has added at least one point in each of his last six games—netting five goals and two assists—a span that stretches all the way back to September 7 against Caldwell. Lages has tallied at least one point in every game he has played in except to the season opener, a 2-0 loss to No. 11 Mercy.

-Lages' goal also puts him in sole possession of third place in most goals during one's career, giving him 28 goals in his four years with so far with the team. Mario Bisol holds the record with 41 goals, set back in 1979.

-Jimenez made eight saves in net, but fell to 6-4-0 on the year. Daniel De La Heras made four saves for the Panthers and improved to 9-0-1.
