- The Lead: It was a bit of retribution and excitement for the No. 5 Assumption Greyhounds against the No. 4 Le Moyne Dolphins in the opening round of the Northeast-10 playoffs, winning 2-0 to earn their first playoff victory in program history, a nice rebound from their 3-1 loss to the Dolphins during the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds controlled play for most of both halves, holding Le Moyne to only two shots on goal, while scoring once in each half. Ruben Faria (Fall River, Mass. / Bishop Connolly) scored first for the Hounds with just 1:36 left in the first half. He rocketed a ball from Jeremy Martin (Hopedale, Mass. / Hopedale) into the back of the net for his first goal since scoring in a 2-0 win against Queens on September 14.
-Nicolas Cardona (San Juan, P.R. / Academia del Perpetuo Socorro / DePaul) added an insurance goal at the 57:59 mark of the second half. Alex Moschella (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) sent a corner kick into the middle of the box and Cardona placed his head on the ball, ricocheting it into the top corner of the net to put his team up by two. The goal was similar to Cardona's game-winning header against Southern N.H. on September 25.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-The win is the first NE10 playoff win for the Hounds, going 0-for-7 in playoff contests leading up to the game. The Hounds were 3-11 all-time against the Dolphins and 1-9 in their last 10 matchups before their upset win. The Dolphins defeated Assumption 3-1 during the regular season.
-Le Moyne outshot the Hounds 15-9, but the Hounds held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Moshella led the team with three shots.
-Cardona had played in only one out of his team's last four games before starting on Saturday. It was a nice way to reintroduce himself to the defensive unit, netting his second goal of the season.
-Sebastian Jimenez (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast High School) made two saves to earn his sixth shutout this season, improving to 10-7-0. Jimenez is now tied for most wins in a season out of any goalkeeper in program history. He is also tied for second-most shutouts in one season as well. Josh Mahr made two saves for Le Moyne, but fell to 10-6-1 for the year.
UP NEXT:
- The Hounds will face the winner of No. 1 Adelphi and No. 8 American Int'l, who kickoff at 7 p.m. tonight. That matchup will take place on Wednesday, November 13, with the time to be determined.
