THE BASICS:
- Score: Assumption 1, Post 0
- Records: Assumption (15-7-3, 7-5-3 NE10), Post (9-15)
-Location: Shelton, Conn. (Sports Center of Connecticut)
-The lead: A 35-save performance by Drew Benedict (Cooper City, Fla. / Cushing Academy) in his first collegiate appearance and a lone goal from Michael Zampanti (Winthrop, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Premier)) led the Assumption Greyhounds to a 1-0 win over the Post Eagles on Friday night in the first of a weekend series between the two teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Zampanti broke the scoreless tie 3:43 into the third period. On his goal, defenseman Matt Drake (Whiting, N.J. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Elite)) sent a puck in from the slot that Ryan Loranger (Billerica, Mass. / Middlesex Black Bears (Prep)) tipped toward the net. Zampanti got the rebound and immediately slipped it into the back of the net for the only goal the Hounds would need on the night.
-Benedict did the rest for the Hounds, saving 13 shots within the third period and 35 in all on the night to complete the shutout in his first collegiate game of his career. Benedict even made five saves within the final two minutes of play to cap off his night.
-The Hounds also had an opportunity with 7:08 left in the second period when Post's Sean Castagna was called for slashing on an Assumption breakaway, which awarded the Hounds a penalty shot. Dante Tomassini (North Branford, Conn. / Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack (EHL)) went for the top right post with the shot but was turned away by Post goalie Brandon Brown.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Assumption outshot the Eagles 53-35, including a 25-6 shot advantage in the first period. The Hounds went 0-for-3 on the power play while Pace went 0-for-5.
-In his first collegiate start, Benedict saved all 35 shots he faced and improved to 1-0 on the year. Brown made 52 saves on 53 shots but fell to 5-12.
-The Hounds have allowed only three goals in their last three games and have played to a 96.6 save percentage during that span. They have had 14 contests decided by one goal this season and are 9-5 during those games.
