- The Lead: The Assumption Greyhounds scored two straight goals, the first coming within the final 10 minutes of play and the second not even a minute into overtime, to complete a 2-1 comeback victory over the Southern Conn. St. Owls on Tuesday night on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Fifty-six seconds into overtime, Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass. / Martha's Vineyard Regional) scored on a rebound shot from the right side of the field. Alex Moschella (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) initially put a shot on net that Southern Conn. St. goalie Andrey Carvalho punched right to Lages. Lages made one move and sent the ball into the back of the net as the game-winner.
-The Hounds had previously tied the game with less than 10 minutes to go in the second half. Producing a game-high 13 shots, Assumption finally put one home at the 82:11 mark. Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Jose) got a nice cross-path from Lages and scored the first of two unanswered goals from the center sideline.
-Southern Conn. St. gained the 1-0 advantage early on thanks to a goal from Daniel Utgaard at the 20:44 mark. The owls pulled goalie Sebastian Jimenez (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast High School) out of position and even though the Hounds got a nice team save on the initial shot, Utgaard scored on the second try for the 1-0 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Assumption held a 13-7 shot advantage, including a 6-3 advantage in the second half and a 2-0 advantage in overtime. The Hounds put a ton of pressure on Carvalho, but Carvalho was still able to make seven saves. Jimenez made five saves throughout the game.
-Lages' goal was his third on the year, while he added his first assist. Lages has tallied seven points in his last three games and has scored in each of those contests.
-Jimenez earned the win for the Hounds and improved to 3-1-0 on the year. After winning NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week Honors last week, Jimenez has allowed only 1.66 goals per game.
