-The Lead: The Assumption College football team defeated the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday night in New Haven, Conn. The Hounds highlighted a strong defense that combined for 73 tackles, eight sacks and three fumbles to hold the hosts to just one touchdown to secure the 19-7 final victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption came out scoring early with a three play, 24-yard drive that resulted in a seven-yard pass from junior quarterback, Easton Turner (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) caught by senior Tighe Beck (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) in the endzone for the 6-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest.
-The Hounds struck again late in the second quarter, gaining 99 yards on 10 plays in 3:53. The drive got going with a 38-yard pass completion between Turner and Beck to get Assumption to the 49-yard line. Senior Doug Santos (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial) rushed 21 yards on the next play before another Turner, Beck combination brought the Hounds to the Owls 20-yard line. First year Berrell Neal (Plainfield, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) rushed eight yards for the touchdown and freshman Patrick May's (Boylston, Mass. / Tahanto Regional) kick was good for the 13-0 lead heading into halftime.
-Southern Connecticut broke their silence in the third quarter when red-shirt senior quarterback, Matt Sanzaro connected with red-shirt sophomore Izaiah Sanders for the 16-yard pass completion and touchdown. Freshman Gavin Toth made the extra-point as the Owls pulled within six with 11:27 on the clock in the third.
-Assumption extended their lead to 12 when they made an 87-yard drive in eight plays for the score with under six minutes to play in the third. Santos rushed for 46 yards in the drive before Turner found first year Brevin Easton (Odenton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) in the endzone for the 19-yard touchdown and the 19-7 lead.
-The Hound's defense held strong in the fourth quarter, opening with a forced fumble by senior Egan Bachtell (Stow, Mass. / Nashoba Regional) in the Owls' first drive. Senior Trenton Wright (Natick, Mass. / Bridgton Academy) recorded a sack for a loss of four yards and senior Calvin Milliner (New York, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) also forced a fumble in the final quarter to help the Hounds clinch the 19-7 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds finished with 355 total yards of offense including 130 passing yards and 225 rushing yards. The Owls put up 259 total yards of offense with 134 passing yards and 125 rushing yards.
-Turner completed 11-of-18 pass attempts and threw two touchdown passes for the Hounds. Santos led the rushing game with 190 yards in 20 rushes. Beck led Assumption in receiving with seven receptions for 90 yards and one touchdown.
-Senior Seamus Wallace (Pawcatuck, Conn. / Stonington) punted seven times for 307 yards for Assumption, including one touchback and four within the 20-yard line.
-Sanzaro finished 11-for-21 in passing attempts and threw one touchdown pass for the Owls. Sophomore Jonmichael Bivona led the hosts' rushing game with 89 yards in 19 rushes while Sanders led in receiving with four receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown.
-Junior Cullen McCarty (York, Maine / Worcester Academy) led the Assumption defense with 10 total tackles while Bachtell and senior Jason Flanagan (North Kingstown, R.I. / North Kingstown) followed with seven each. Bachtell also finished with a sack for a loss of four yards and two forced fumbles. The Hounds totaled eight sacks for a loss of 55 total yards and three forced fumbles in the victory..
-Kyle Armour led the Southern Conn. St. defense with nine total tackles, six solo and three assists.
